The Soul of Our Garden: A 15-Year Journey with a Banyan Tree

How a tiny sapling we rescued grew into the living heart of our garden

Fifteen years ago, during one of our casual walks near an overgrown patch of land, my father and I stumbled upon a tiny banyan sapling struggling to breathe amidst a tangled mass of wild shrubs and weeds. It was easy to overlook, barely noticeable, shaded out and nearly defeated by the wild chaos around it. But something about its resilience caught our eye. We felt a strange connection, as if this little tree was calling out for a second chance. With gentle hands and hopeful hearts, we brought the sapling home to our "quarry", a rugged quarry site we were slowly transforming into a sanctuary of life, beauty and peace. Knowing the potential of the banyan to become a symbol of strength and shelter, we chose a strategic spot on the edge of the quarry pond, where erosion was a concern. We fortified the area with a small stone and concrete enclosure, filling it with fertile soil and care. Then, we planted our tiny companion and gave it a new beginning.Years passed.....What started as a small gesture of love and hope has grown into a majestic presence in our garden. The once frail sapling is now a mighty banyan tree, with its roots gripping the earth like guardians and its branches spreading wide as if embracing all who enter. Its reflection dances on the water, and its shade shelters the quiet moments we share with our pets and each other. Beneath its canopy, time seems to slow down.Every time I look at it, I'm reminded of the power of nurturing something with love and patience. It isn’t just a tree, it’s a living memory, a testament to what can flourish when given care, space and trust. It has become the soul of our garden, silently witnessing the seasons of our life. From the humblest beginnings to a towering guardian of nature, this banyan tree is not just part of our land, it’s part of our story.

"When you nurture life, it grows into something greater than you ever imagined."

The Cherry Wall: A Forest from a Stone

In the heart of our beloved Quarry, where time has carved cliffs and rain has etched memories, stood a young Singapore Cherry tree. Planted years ago in a low-lying pocket near the waterbody, this sapling was more than a tree, it was an afforestation seedling, a spark of life that would one day grow into a natural sanctuary. But nature, as nurturing as it is, can also test our intentions. With each passing monsoon, the water level in the quarry would rise. And soon, it became clear, the tree stood on borrowed time. One heavy rain, and the waters could drown its roots.Seeing this, my father and I decided to act, not with bought materials, but with the very soul of the place itself. We gathered stones scattered across the quarry floor, dug up earth from the quarry slopes, and began our mission: to raise the land and protect the tree. What began as a weekend task slowly turned into a labor of love. Stone by stone, handful by handful, we built a wall, not just to hold water back, but to lift life forward. There were no machines, no cement mixers, only our hands, our time, and the raw resources the quarry had quietly offered us.Eventually, we succeeded. The ground around the cherry tree stood higher, safe from the touch of rising waters. And the tree? It thrived. It grew stronger, taller, and prouder. And as if in gratitude, it sprouted companions, wild saplings, flowering shrubs, and crawling vines, until the area transformed into a lush canopy of green.A jungle, born from a single act of care.Today, when we look at that corner of the quarry, we don’t just see a wall. We see resilience, vision, and a reminder that with love and intent, even leftover stones can build the future.

“We raised a wall not to divide, but to let a forest thrive.”

Project Floatwell: The Great Quarry Raft

"In still waters, our wildest ideas took flight."

In a forgotten corner of our quarry, now a blossoming paradise, a strange vessel once glided across the green waters. No, it wasn’t a luxury yacht or a fishing canoe. It was The Great Quarry Raft, our very own homemade watercraft, proudly engineered by my dad and me with zero budget and maximum imagination. The journey began with a raw prototype, a sturdy skeleton of leftover PVC pipes, lashed together with rope and pure optimism. For safety, we even added a life-saving buoy. The seating area? A timeworn bed frame that had probably retired from sleeping decades ago. And the paddle? A stroke of absurd genius, a PVC pipe with waste collection pans fixed to both ends. Yes, you read that right. Part oar, part scoop, and entirely ridiculous. We tested buoyancy, calculated balance, and launched our raft like proud shipwrights watching their vessel conquer the seas, or in our case, a green pond with mysterious depths. That quirky vessel became more than just a raft. It became a symbol of weekend bonding, creative thinking, and the sheer joy of turning discarded “junk” into unforgettable memories. Even today, when we look at that old pond, we remember the squeaky paddle strokes, our laughter echoing off the quarry walls, and the smug satisfaction of proving that, with the right mindset, even an old bed can sail.
